Colombo Student Council Raises Concerns Over State Repression in France
The Colombo-based French Embassy has received a formal letter from the Inter-University Student Council condemning the severe state repression against peaceful protests by students in France, which are aimed at tackling government cutbacks in public education, systemic injustices, and the rising cost of living.
Signed by Madushan Chandrjit, the convener of the Inter-University Student Council, the letter emphasizes that education is a fundamental human right and not a privilege. It highlights the solidarity shown by Sri Lankan students with their French counterparts in their legitimate struggles.
The letter points out the alarming educational crisis in France, where over 400 schools face closure or operational disruptions due to a critical shortage of teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and neglected school infrastructures. In response to the government’s continuous funding cuts to education, thousands of students, teachers, and parents are actively participating in widespread protests.
Instead of providing meaningful solutions to these pressing issues, the French government has resorted to aggressive repression of students by deploying riot police, tear gas, and baton assaults against demonstrators. Since the protests began, nearly 3,000 individuals, many of them school-aged children, have been arrested. The document also mentions that parents are now being threatened with compensation claims for damages incurred during the protests, further infringing on students' democratic rights.
This crisis is not limited to France; the student council asserts that it reflects a broader collapse of neoliberal economic systems that prioritize profit over social welfare. It cites similar struggles across the region, with students in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh taking to the streets to advocate for their educational rights.
Notably, the proposed education reforms and school restructuring in Sri Lanka pose a threat of consolidation or closure for a significant portion of the over 3,000 schools, compounded by an ongoing teacher shortage, budget cuts, and surging living costs, leaving local students similarly pressured.
In recent months, a wave of substantial labor strikes and protests linked to French schools and universities has surged, spurred on by the government’s stringent financial austerity measures, pension reforms, and resource constraints in the education sector.
The violent crackdown on protesting students by French police has drawn severe criticism internationally from human rights organizations and global student bodies. The Inter-University Student Council in Sri Lanka has consistently expressed solidarity with international student movements, emphasizing a long-standing commitment to the preservation of educational rights across borders.
