Saudi Arabia Readies Massive Military Operation in Yemen Against Houthi Forces

In a bold move to reclaim strategic territories in Yemen currently held by Iranian-backed Houthi militants, Saudi Arabia is preparing to launch a large-scale military operation, as reported by Reuters. The campaign aims at retaking these regions amid escalating conflict.

The report, citing Gulf region officials and Western intelligence sources, highlights that over 100,000 troops from the Yemeni government forces are mobilized to support this initiative. The Saudi military plans to execute the operation under direct oversight and with significant airstrike support.

While the United States and other Western nations have pledged to assist Riyadh with intelligence and military aid, they are not expected to engage in ground combat directly.

Saudi military planners are currently focusing on key strategic locations near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, including coastal areas around the Red Sea, the recently captured port of Mokha, and Perim Island. Their strategy involves launching a two-pronged assault targeting Houthi strongholds across several fronts, specifically in areas like Al-Bayda, Marib, Taiz, and Al-Jawf.

In the past 24 hours, Saudi forces have carried out 94 airstrikes on Houthi-controlled zones, reportedly targeting civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals. Houthi spokesman Omar al-Bukhaiti dismissed claims of these strikes as entirely unfounded, despite allegations that they had previously targeted Saudi energy facilities with drone and missile attacks. They refuted the Saudi claim of a strike on a facility in Medina, calling it a blatant lie.

Amid heightened geopolitical tensions and fears of disruption to naval traffic in the Hormuz Strait, Saudi Arabia is bolstering its defensive strategies alongside allied nations. The United Kingdom has agreed to provide in-flight refueling for Saudi aircraft, while France has deployed troops, radar systems, and air defense measures to secure the critical Yanbu oil facilities in the Red Sea.

Additionally, reports suggest that Pakistan has sent between 30,000 and 40,000 troops to bolster Saudi defenses against missile and drone attacks. Although Pakistani military experts are collaborating with Saudi forces, they have opted not to engage in direct combat operations within Yemen.
