No Barriers for Private Fuel Companies to Set Prices, Clarifies Chairman of Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation

The Chairman of the Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation, D.J. Rajakaruna, has asserted that private fuel companies are free to sell fuel at any price they deem appropriate, with no constraints imposed on them.

He further emphasized that unless there is a significant upheaval in the global market, there are no immediate plans for an increase in the prices of fuel sold by Sri Lanka's Sitpetco within the next three months.

Addressing the media about the challenges and losses faced by private fuel companies, Rajakaruna pointed out that if these companies suffer losses due to selling fuel at government-mandated prices, there is an existing agreement that the government must compensate for those losses.

However, he noted that the government has yet to issue any written directive to these companies requiring them to sell fuel at a fixed price.

Currently, these companies are following the price structure set by the Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation voluntarily, which grants them the full freedom to set their prices should they incur any losses, as clarified by the Chairman.

He also reassured that regardless of any market fluctuations, the Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation is well-equipped to continue providing services to the public without imposing any additional burden.

In a responsible declaration, Rajakaruna confirmed that the corporation will not propose any price increases for fuel until the end of this month or likely for the next three months.

Additionally, he urged the public not to harbor undue anxiety regarding the country’s fuel reserves, assuring that steps are being actively taken to manage the reserves effectively without any issues going forward.
