Parliamentarian Highlights Legal Process Required for Presidential Pardon of Ven. Gnanasara Thera

National People's Power Parliamentarian Lakshman Nipunarachchi has emphasized that any potential presidential pardon for Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera can only be granted following a formal request aligned with legal protocols stemming from a court decision.

Speaking to the media, Nipunarachchi addressed remarks made by Gnanasara Thera, who suggested that a special presidential pardon could be executed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to rectify a prior wrongdoing.

The parliamentarian further articulated that a court's ruling cannot be arbitrarily altered by the President according to personal preference. He warned that such actions could lead the public to perceive the President as a dictator.

If a pardon is sought regarding a specific wrongdoing, there exists a legal framework to facilitate that process, he clarified, underscoring that requests made in adherence to this procedure may be considered.

Nipunarachchi noted that previous presidents have faced challenges in court due to their willingness to bypass the law in pursuit of their agendas. He reiterated that the current President is obliged to operate within the legal constraints and would refrain from acting unilaterally without public mandate.
