Opposition Divided Over No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Jagath K. Vikramaratne

Recent developments surrounding the no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath K. Vikramaratne have revealed a rift within the National People's Power (NPP) parliamentary group. S.M. Marikkar, an opposition parliamentarian, disclosed that internal disagreements have emerged within the party as they navigate the situation.

During a press briefing today, Marikkar emphasized that a faction of government lawmakers is actively rejecting any support for the Speaker, complicating the opposition's stance. He pointed out that this division could affect their collective approach to the motion against Vikramaratne.

Moreover, he suggested that the government might be attempting to postpone or circumvent a parliamentary debate on the no-confidence motion in order to manage internal dissent and stabilize its position. His remarks allude to concerns about the government's strategy to avoid confronting the issues raised in the motion.

"A significant group of government MPs is refusing to protect the Speaker," Marikkar stated. "The government's efforts to evade this no-confidence debate and downplay its implications are evident. However, the opposition has no intention of diluting or altering the motion in any way," he further emphasized.
