Tamil Nadu Politician Arrested in Major Drug Smuggling Operation

In a significant crackdown, authorities have arrested a member of the Tamil Nadu political party Tamilaga Vetria Kaalagam (TVK) in Nagapattinam, who was allegedly involved in smuggling a substantial quantity of illicit methamphetamine, known locally as 'Ice.' Reports indicate that this drug haul is valued at several crore rupees.

The arrest has intensified political tensions in Tamil Nadu, as covered by the NDTV news service, sparking heated discussions across local political circles.

The seized drugs reportedly weighed approximately 135 kilograms, with opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin asserting on social media that their market value could reach several crores of Indian rupees. He highlighted that this consignment was prepared for transportation to Sri Lanka via sea routes.

Despite the significant implications of this bust, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has yet to issue an official statement regarding the operation, leading to further scrutiny on the authorities.

The arrested individual, known as Poobalan, is a key operative within the TVK party and has been seen in close association with prominent leaders such as Chief Minister and TVK head C. Joseph Vijay, with images of their camaraderie circulating rapidly on social media.

Stalin criticized the irony of this incident, given that Vijay's election campaign prominently featured a call to “stay away from drugs." He questioned the government's genuine commitment to combatting drug issues, citing the need for accountability and transparency.

Stalin further alleged that influential figures within the ruling party are complicit in these criminal activities. He called for a thorough investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) to delve deeper into the smuggling network.

In a response to NDTV, TVK spokesperson M. Sathya Kumar confirmed the party's swift action to suspend the involved individual from all party memberships upon gaining awareness of the situation. "We acted promptly to expel him from the party once we received information," he remarked, adding that it is impractical to constantly vet every member's background.

Kumar also recalled an earlier incident during the DMK administration when a trafficker named Jaffer Sadik was arrested, suggesting that the party had historically dealt with similar issues in a proactive manner.
