Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa Mourns the Death of 'Kavinthissa' the Elephant

In a poignant tribute, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has expressed his sorrow following the passing of 'Kavinthissa', an elephant that succumbed to serious injuries after a gun attack yesterday afternoon. His heartfelt note reflects on the deep cultural and historical significance of elephants in Sri Lanka.

Rajapaksa noted, "The majestic dual-headed elephant Kavinthissa was captured by the forests one last time, mirroring the powerful connection between our heritage and wildlife." Throughout Sri Lanka's history, elephants have played a pivotal role, with their presence woven into the narratives of royal processions, coronations, and courageous battles.

Every corner of the Mahavamsa, an ancient chronicle of Sri Lanka, recounts tales where these magnificent creatures graced the arena. There exists not a single celebration of state or a royal event where an elephant has not been a key participant. Within the annals of our history, they stood parallel to kings.

Emphasizing their spiritual significance, Rajapaksa remarked, "Within Buddhist teachings, elephants have represented the essence of bodhisattva. The legacy of Gaja (the elephant) is one that resonates with wisdom and strength within our cultural framework." Elephants embody a living symbol of our history, faith, art, and daily life, being revered as symbols of dignity and craftsmanship.

With a heart filled with pride, strength, resilience, and compassion, he bids farewell to the cherished representatives of our motherland, the noble elephant lineage, wishing them a blessed journey ahead.
