Fuel Crisis Deepens Across Sri Lanka as Diesel and Petrol Shortages Persist

Fuel stations across Colombo and various regions of the country are witnessing long queues, as consumers grapple with a dire shortage of diesel and petrol. The situation has reached a critical point, leading to growing frustration among vehicle owners.

The shortage of diesel has been a pressing issue for several weeks, attributed to fuel companies limiting diesel distribution due to inadequate cost coverage. This limitation has created a ripple effect on availability and accessibility of fuel across the nation.

In addition to diesel, a recent surge in demand has resulted in a scarcity of petrol as well, particularly the 92 Octane variant. Many filling stations report they only have 95 Octane available, which has left customers dissatisfied and scrambling for alternatives.

The subject was addressed in Parliament by the Minister of Power and Energy, who indicated that the issue should be alleviated by the approaching Thursday. He asserted that actions would be implemented to ensure that there is no fuel shortage in the market.

However, oil trading companies in the country have raised concerns. They stated that they are unable to sell fuel at a lower price in comparison to global market rates, which has become a significant barrier for them, resulting in the continuation of restricted diesel sales.
