Former President Shiranti Rajapaksa Granted Bail Amid Ongoing Investigation into 'Sirilia Sawiya' Organization

In a significant ruling, the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court has ordered the release on bail of former president Shiranti Rajapaksa, who has been in custody as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption and bribery linked to the 'Sirilia Sawiya' organization. She was granted bail under two sureties amounting to Rs. 100 million.

The decision followed a presentation of arguments by additional solicitor general Dilip Peiris, representing the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, and the legal team for Rajapaksa. Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama emphasized the importance of the information presented during the proceedings.

The investigation focuses on a case involving Rs. 10 million belonging to the National Savings Bank, which was allegedly misappropriated and deposited into the 'Sirilia Sawiya' organization's account through illicit means. This development led to her arrest by the bribery commission and subsequent appearances in court last week.

Founded during Mahinda Rajapaksa's presidency, the 'Sirilia Sawiya' organization aimed to promote women's and children's welfare. However, it has come under scrutiny for receiving unlawful financial contributions and fund transfers from various state institutions, banks, and external parties over the years. This investigation has been ongoing for several years, managed by the police's financial crimes unit and the bribery commission.

Allegations have emerged regarding the use of falsified information to open these accounts, including potential violations under anti-money laundering and bribery laws. Previously, Shiranti Rajapaksa was questioned by investigative officers on multiple occasions concerning these financial transactions.
