Post-Mortem Examination Ordered for Iconic Sri Lankan Elephant 'Kawantissa' Following Fatal Shooting

In a tragic turn of events, 'Kawantissa,' renowned as one of Sri Lanka's largest wild elephants, succumbed to injuries sustained from a gunshot wound yesterday (16) evening. The Department of Wildlife Conservation announced plans to seek a court order today (17) for a post-mortem examination of the iconic creature's remains.

Once the court order is secured, wildlife officials intend to forward the body to a team of experts from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Peradeniya. They aim to uncover the specific factors leading to the elephant's demise.

Further discussions took place last night regarding the final rites expected for the elephant following the post-mortem examination.

Wildlife officers located Kawantissa during the early hours of yesterday, trapped in a muddy pit within the Siyambalangamuwa wildlife range. Reports indicate the elephant had previously traveled approximately two kilometers from the site of earlier treatment, struggling with severe health issues that led to its entrapment in the pit. Wildlife veterinary teams worked tirelessly around the clock in an effort to save the elephant's life, administering intensive care and treatment.

The shooting had occurred on the elephant's front right leg, and while the initial veterinary care showed some progress in healing the wound, the refusal to consume food and water ultimately resulted in a significant decline in health, leading to its unfortunate death.
