Iran Issues Stark Warning on Potential Cyber Attacks Amid Rising U.S. Tensions

In a significant escalation of rhetoric, Iran has issued a grave warning about potential cyberattacks targeting data centers, communication cable systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) facilities in the Middle East region, should the United States engage in military conflict. The alert was made by Iranian Defense Chief Mohsen Rezaei, highlighting the strategic implications of such a conflict, especially in relation to critical maritime routes in the Red Sea.

International analysts have underscored that the ongoing power struggle in this area poses a severe threat to internet communication systems vital for connecting Europe and Asia. According to a report by Al Jazeera, citing data from TeleGeography, more than 90% of data traffic between Europe and Asia traverses the undersea fiber optic cable systems running beneath the Red Sea.

These cables traverse the narrow Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which spans approximately 26 kilometers and acts as a major conduit for global internet traffic, accounting for nearly one-fifth of total global internet bandwidth. Escalating violence between the Yemeni government and Houthi fighters has already been reported in this area, raising concerns that any damage to the undersea cables could dramatically hinder internet services and complicate repair efforts due to security concerns.

The Houthis have made attempts to seize control of the Mayyun Island, located strategically close to the maritime strait, furthering the ongoing conflict in the region. Should clashes impact the undersea cable systems, the repercussions could be severe for communication networks vital to both regional and global connectivity.

Recent months have seen heightened military activity targeting technical infrastructure in the Gulf region, particularly during operations carried out by the U.S. and Israel against Iranian positions and civilian targets. Iran has retaliated with attacks on American business installations in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates in response to these military operations.

In one notable incident, drone attacks targeted two Amazon Web Services facilities in the United Arab Emirates, resulting in significant physical damage to another site in Bahrain. AWS confirmed that some data systems remained irrecoverable as of September of this year.

Moreover, Iranian media has highlighted that the Iran Revolutionary Guard has included major American companies such as Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Meta, and Apple, along with AI corporation G42 from the UAE, in their list of future attack targets.

Andreas Krieg, a senior lecturer at King’s College London specializing in defense studies, emphasized that disabling a data center does not necessarily require its complete annihilation. Interruptions in consistent electricity supply, cooling systems, or external communications could significantly cripple the operations of such facilities.

Krieg elaborated that Iran's actions are not merely aimed at threatening another target; they are strategically targeting modern technology linked to the future economy of the Gulf region, particularly in direct conflict with American technological interests. With drones capable of being manufactured at relatively low costs, Iran possesses the means to endanger infrastructure worth billions of dollars. The primary aim seems to be to signal warnings to Gulf capitals like Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, thereby maintaining a tactical advantage.

As Gulf nations strive to pivot away from oil dependency, they are investing heavily into artificial intelligence and digital technology centers. The UAE has embarked on massive AI projects in collaboration with companies like OpenAI and Nvidia, while Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has initiated Arab AI initiatives under the name ‘Humain’. Microsoft has also announced investments exceeding $10 billion aimed at enhancing the region's digital security.

In light of the escalating military threats, attention is shifting towards alternative terrestrial cable routes that could transport data through Iraq to Turkey and Europe, bypassing the Red Sea. Ooredoo, a telecommunications provider in Qatar, has reportedly engaged in agreements to establish new communication routes via Iraq, with Google and Meta also taking steps to route some of their data traffic through the country. However, experts caution that the high costs and current developmental status of these alternate routes present significant challenges for the technological landscape in the region.
