Government Cracks Down on Disruptive Behavior Towards Metro Bus Services
The Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake, has affirmed that stringent legal measures will be taken against private bus operators engaged in obstructive activities and accidents targeting the metro bus service. This announcement underscores the government's commitment to maintaining order within the public transportation framework.
Speaking to the media, the Minister emphasized the detrimental nature of deliberate collusion and road blockages, viewing them as direct attacks on public property. He highlighted that such unlawful actions would not only jeopardize the smooth operation of the metro service but would also result in severe legal consequences for both the drivers involved and the bus owners.
However, he noted that the majority of over 100 metro buses currently in operation have not faced any disruptions from private bus operators, indicating that only a small minority is engaged in these problematic actions. This distinction, he pointed out, means that the issue does not reflect the concerns of all private bus owners.
Minister Rathnayake urged all parties to avoid inciting unnecessary hardships by indulging in such activities. He called for their cooperation in adhering to the recently welcomed metro transport system, which aims for a more efficient public transportation network across the country.
Additionally, the Minister disclosed future plans to open the metro bus services to the private sector within the next year, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance public transport options in Sri Lanka.
