Power Outage Halts Operations at Norochcholai Coal Power Plant
A sudden nationwide power failure has completely incapacitated the three operational units at the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant, as confirmed by plant management.
Authorities noted that a significant technical malfunction within the national electricity system, coupled with a simultaneous drop in frequency, triggered automatic safety measures, resulting in the immediate suspension of the plant's operations.
As a consequence of this unexpected shutdown, the entire capacity provided to the national grid by the Norochcholai plant has been rendered unavailable.
Unlike hydro or diesel plants, coal power facilities lack the capability for rapid restart following a system shutdown. Engineers indicate that it typically requires a minimum of 48 to 72 hours for the system to return to operational pressure after allowing the high-temperature boilers and steam turbines to cool down.
The Norochcholai Lakvijaya plant, with its three generating units, contributes over 40% of Sri Lanka's daily electricity demand, providing 300 megawatts of capacity. Historically, this plant has consistently gone offline during previous nationwide power outages, presenting a considerable challenge to authorities as they strive to manage the substantial 900-megawatt deficit until the plant can be restored to service.
