Former Minister GL Peiris Testifies Before Bribery Commission Regarding Shangri-La Hotel Project
In a significant step in the investigation into land allocation for the luxurious Shangri-La hotel project in Colombo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, G.L. Peiris, appeared before the Bribery or Corruption Investigations Commission on the 20th. His presence aims to clarify allegations surrounding the transaction.
During a two-hour session, commission members posed various questions to Peiris regarding the matter, meticulously documenting his statements. Following the testimony, Peiris addressed the media, revealing that upon assuming office as Foreign Minister on April 23, 2010, he had been informed by the board of directors of the Shangri-La hotel chain about their official intention to invest in Sri Lanka.
“At that time, President Mahinda Rajapaksa explicitly conveyed to me that this was a rare and valuable investment opportunity for the country. He instructed me to invite them to come to Sri Lanka, which they eventually did, leading to their investment,” Peiris explained. He further emphasized the vast developmental progress brought about by the investment, comparing the state of Colombo in 2010 to that of today, stating that anyone could witness the significant advancements achieved.
Responding to probing questions from journalists regarding any irregularities or financial misconduct, the former minister asserted that the commission’s officials had clearly stated that no allegations of corruption or malpractice were directed against him.
Peiris also categorically denied any link between the investigation and the controversial 'Krus' deal, confirming that neither term nor discussion related to it occurred during his testimony.
“While it is reasonable to conduct investigations and punish wrongdoers if an offense has occurred, we must not allow the law to be misused for political vendettas aimed at silencing adversaries,” he added, highlighting the importance of maintaining integrity in the investigative process.
