Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Seeks to Lift Travel Ban Related to Easter Sunday Attack Investigations
In a significant legal move, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has filed a petition in the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court, requesting the removal of a travel ban imposed on him in relation to investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks of 2019.
Rajapaksa, who recently underwent heart surgery in Singapore, emphasized the necessity for overseas travel to receive essential post-operative care. His legal representatives presented the petition, urging the court to lift the restrictions currently in place.
This travel ban was initially imposed by the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court approximately four months ago in connection with ongoing inquiries by the Criminal Investigation Department regarding the failure to prevent the 2019 attacks.
In addition to Rajapaksa, the travel restrictions also apply to others involved in the investigations, including Army Colonel Mohamed Ansar and a former official from the military intelligence unit, Premananda Udalagama. The Magistrate had previously ordered these travel bans as part of the extensive probe into the attack.
