Strengthening Ties: Sri Lanka and Japan Enhance Economic Cooperation

The enduring friendship between Sri Lanka and Japan, based on mutual trust and respect, continues to flourish as both nations seek to expand their economic ties and industrial collaboration. A pivotal meeting, the Sri Lanka-Japan Mineral Sector Forum, took place on October 14 in Tokyo.

Committed under the leadership of Minister of Industry and Industrial Development, Sunil Handunetti, the forum brought together representatives from the Japanese government, as well as prominent organizations such as JETRO, JOGMEC, and JICA, alongside top-tier Japanese investors and business leaders.

During his address, the Minister reflected on the historical trade relations that commenced in 1962 with the first shipment of ilmenite to Japan. He emphasized that the current stable political climate, rule of law, peace, and transparency under the present government provide an excellent environment for Japanese investors in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, he noted the potential of the mineral sector to make significant contributions toward reaching an ambitious target of $36 billion in export revenue by 2030.

The government aspires to go beyond merely exporting mineral resources like graphite, mineral sands, quartz, and silica. There is a clear focus on adding value and entering the global marketplace through advanced production techniques.

Japan, with its expertise in high technology and specialized knowledge, is seen as an ideal strategic partner in these efforts. The Minister pointed out that a new national mineral policy has established a framework for responsible investments. He warmly invited Japanese investors to identify resources, import technology, and collaborate with Sri Lankan partners to foster business development.
