University Admission Crisis Looms as Students Face Extended Wait Times

The University Grants Commission has issued a stark warning that there will be no capacity to accommodate new student intakes at universities in September 2025. As the academic year approaches, the ongoing crisis in higher education means that students who have recently completed their Advanced Level examinations may be forced to remain at home for nearly four years before they gain university access, signaling a looming social disaster, according to the University Teachers’ Association conference.

Speaking at a special media briefing, the association's Secretary, Senior Professor Charudatta Ilangasinghe, highlighted that despite the serious disruptions within the university system, the commission is moving forward with plans to increase student numbers by admitting new students in September.

Typically, universities are designed to host no more than four student groups at any given time. However, the current situation has forced many institutions to simultaneously manage five or even six groups in their academic activities, he pointed out.

As an example, he noted that classes for the first-year cohort of the 2024 Advanced Level group at the University of Aesthetic Studies commenced only last week. This leads to pressing questions about how the 2025 group will be accommodated come September under such circumstances.

This crisis threatens to extend the enrollment of the 2025 cohort for several more months, with the anticipated influx of the 2026 Advanced Level group exacerbating the scenario. If this trend continues, the entire academic system could face a catastrophic failure, he warned.

Professor Ilangasinghe emphasized that it is a national disgrace for students who have completed their Advanced Level examinations to be left at home for three to four years before they can start their higher education.

Recalling the struggles of academics who have been managing an unsustainable burden by simultaneously overseeing five to six student groups, he expressed deep concern that the government may not fully understand the severity of this crisis. If the situation does not improve, university academics may no longer be willing to shoulder such immense pressure, he cautioned.
