Sri Lanka's Tax Revenue Shortfall Projected to Reach Rs. 2.1 Trillion by 2025

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Sri Lanka's uncollected tax revenue could surge to a staggering Rs. 2.1 trillion by the close of 2025. This alarming deficit poses serious risks for economic inequality and poverty in the country, as the burden of tax policies falls disproportionately on the general populace, according to the latest research findings from the organization.

A comprehensive report conducted in collaboration with the British Commonwealth Office and the IMF reveals that certain tax policies aimed at meeting public revenue targets have had detrimental effects on the lower strata of society. The government's failure to collect a significant amount from large-scale tax evaders and corporations has exacerbated the nation's financial crisis.

The report stresses that hastily implemented and unstructured tax measures to mitigate this considerable revenue shortfall further threaten citizens' welfare in both the short and long term. Specific attempts to increase state revenue through surcharges and consumption taxes disproportionately impact low-income groups, exacerbating existing inequalities.

Despite glimpses of rapid economic growth, the widening income gap between the affluent and the impoverished is a growing concern. High levels of economic disparity are identified as a key factor undermining sustainable overall economic development and hampering the recovery process post-crisis.

Moreover, the upward pressure on prices for essential goods, largely unseen in generalized inflation data, significantly burdens low-income households. This creates risks of persistent poverty, as these families struggle to meet fundamental needs like nutrition, health, and education.

The economic crisis and subsequent austerity measures have further diminished female participation in the workforce, with ineffective social security systems exacerbating the situation by severely limiting opportunities for economic advancement.

Amidst high tax burdens and economic instability, the costs of "brain drain" from the country due to professionals leaving far exceed the economic benefits garnered from remittances sent home by expatriates, as noted in the IMF's research. Additionally, the looming high global interest rates have drastically reduced financial sustainability for maintaining loans.
