Court Orders Arrest of Protesters for Illegal Use of Sound Equipment
During a protest at Viharamahadevi Park, the Additional Magistrate of Colombo, Lahiru Silva, issued a directive for the immediate arrest of individuals allegedly using sound broadcasting equipment without the necessary permits. This order was prompted by calls from the Bodubala Sena organization’s General Secretary, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, for his release.
The directive followed a report presented by officers from the Kurunduwatta Police, who brought the matter to the court's attention. According to the complaint made by Chief Inspector Sagara Daya-ratna, the court was informed yesterday about the ongoing protest activities.
Representatives from the Kurunduwatta Police reported that despite the court orders, participants, including monks and civil activists, continued to demonstrate at Viharamahadevi Park while using sound equipment without any permits.
In response, the police have initiated inquiries into the incident. Magistrate Silva instructed the police to apprehend the suspects involved and also stipulated that they must report back to the court on the progress of the investigation.
This situation highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the right to protest and the regulatory frameworks governing public demonstrations in Sri Lanka.
