Groundbreaking Microchip Initiative Launched in Homagama to Monitor Stray Dogs
The Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha has initiated an innovative program aimed at creating an accurate data system for monitoring stray dogs on the highways. This initiative involves embedding 'microchips' into the bodies of these animals to track their health conditions and habitats.
This technological approach allows local governing authorities to identify each animal individually and access their health records at any given moment. Particularly in situations where a person might be attacked by a stray dog, or during emergencies, the system provides immediate access to confirm whether the dog has received appropriate vaccinations for zoonotic diseases and helps locate any strays in distress.
The issue of stray dogs roaming along main roads has become a significant problem, especially in popular tourist areas such as Galle, posing risks to both the public and visitors.
Historically, the collection of accurate information and maintaining organized records about stray animals has been a major challenge for local government institutions. However, the new initiative by the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha is expected to provide a technological solution to this pressing issue.
In addition to this program, a related initiative focusing on the registration of stray dogs and administering rabies vaccinations was successfully conducted recently at the Hettan - Digana Urban Council Hall, aiming to eliminate the rabies threat.
