බස්නාහිර පළාත තුළ ක්රියාත්මක කරන ලද ජංගම මත්ද්රව්ය පරීක්ෂණ වැඩසටහනකදී බස් රියදුරන් සහ කොන්දොස්තරවරුන් 239 දෙනෙකු තහනම් මත්ද්රව්ය භාවිත කර ඇති බවට තහවුරු වී ඇතැයි ජාතික ප්රවාහන වෛද්ය ආයතනය පවසයි.
පසුගිය වසරේ නොවැම්බර් මාසයේ සිට ආරම්භ කරන ලද මෙම විශේෂ මෙහෙයුම යටතේ රියදුරන් සහ කොන්දොස්තරවරුන් 5,242 දෙනෙකු පරීක්ෂාවට ලක් කර ඇති බව එම ආයතනයේ සභාපති මහාචාර්ය ක්ලිෆර්ඩ් පෙරේරා මහතා සඳහන් කළේය. එහිදී මත්ද්රව්ය භාවිත කළ බවට තහවුරු වූ පුද්ගලයන්ට එරෙහිව නීතිමය පියවර ගැනීමට කටයුතු කර තිබේ.
රිය අනතුරු හේතුවෙන් සිදුවන මරණ සහ බරපතළ තුවාලවලට මත්ද්රව්ය භාවිත කර රිය පැදවීම ප්රධාන හේතුවක් වී ඇති බව පෙන්වා දුන් මහාචාර්යවරයා, මගී ආරක්ෂාව වෙනුවෙන් රියදුරන් මත්ද්රව්යවලින් තොරව සේවය කිරීම අත්යවශ්ය බව අවධාරණය කළේය.
මෙම ජංගම පරීක්ෂණ වැඩසටහන වසර අවසානයට පෙර දිවයින පුරා ව්යාප්ත කිරීමටත්, පරීක්ෂණ සංඛ්යාව දෙගුණ කිරීමටත් සැලසුම් කර ඇති බව ද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.
මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් අදහස් දැක්වූ ජාතික ප්රවාහන කොමිෂන් සභාවේ සභාපති ඉංජිනේරු පී. ඒ. චන්ද්රපාල මහතා ප්රකාශ කළේ, මත්ද්රව්ය භාවිත කර රිය පැදවීම මගීන්ගේ ආරක්ෂිත ගමන් අයිතිය උල්ලංඝනය කිරීමක් බවයි. එවැනි රියදුරන්ගේ රියදුරු බලපත්රය අහෝසි වීමට පවා මෙම වරද හේතු විය හැකි බව ඔහු අනතුරු ඇඟවීය.
බස්නාහිර පළාත් මාර්ගස්ථ මගී ප්රවාහන අධිකාරියේ සභාපති ගාමිණී ජාසිංහ මහතා සඳහන් කළේ, පළාතේ 11,000ක් පමණ වන ප්රවාහන සේවකයන් අතරින් වරදකරුවන් පමණක් හඳුනා ගැනීම මෙම වැඩසටහනේ අරමුණ බවයි. එමඟින් සමස්ත ප්රවාහන ක්ෂේත්රයටම එල්ල වන පොදු චෝදනා ඉවත් කිරීමට හැකි වනු ඇතැයි ඔහු විශ්වාසය පළ කළේය.
මාර්ග ආරක්ෂාව පිළිබඳ ජාතික සභාවේ සභාපති ඉංජිනේරු මංජුල කුලරත්න මහතා පැවසුවේ, ජීවිත සහ දේපළ ආරක්ෂා කර ගැනීම සඳහා රජය ක්රියාත්මක කරන දිගුකාලීන මාර්ග ආරක්ෂණ සැලැස්මේ වැදගත් අංගයක් ලෙස මෙම ජංගම පරීක්ෂණ ඒකක අඛණ්ඩව ක්රියාත්මක කරන බවයි.
239 Drivers and Conductors Confirmed Under the Influence of Drugs in Western Province
The National Transport Medical Institute has reported that a recent mobile drug testing initiative in the Western Province has revealed that 239 drivers and conductors were found to be using prohibited substances.
Launched in November of last year, this specialized operation has seen a total of 5,242 drivers and conductors tested, as stated by Professor Clifford Pereira, the Chairman of the institute. Legal action has been initiated against those confirmed to have used drugs.
Professor Pereira highlighted that driving under the influence is a major factor contributing to fatal accidents and serious injuries. He emphasized the necessity for drivers to operate vehicles free of drugs to ensure passenger safety.
He further revealed plans to expand this mobile testing program nationwide before the end of the year, aiming to double the number of tests conducted.
Engineer P. A. Chandrapala, Chairman of the National Transport Commission, commented that driving under the influence undermines the right of passengers to safe travel. Such offenses could lead to the revocation of the driver's license, he warned.
Gamini Jasinghe, Chairman of the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority, remarked that the program’s objective is to identify only those offenders among approximately 11,000 transport workers in the region. He expressed hope that this initiative would alleviate the general accusations directed toward the entire transportation sector.
Engineer Manjula Kularatna, Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety, stated that this mobile testing unit is a crucial component of the government's long-term road safety strategy, aimed at protecting lives and property.
