Calls to Abandon Proposed Media Authority Law Amidst Concerns for Press Freedom

The proposed legislation to establish a 'Regulated Media Authority' has sparked an outcry from the independent media sector, which is urging the government to withdraw the bill immediately, citing this move as a strategic attempt to limit media freedom. The organization warns that the legislation poses a significant threat to the autonomy of the media landscape.

In a recent statement, the independent media body emphasized that the proposed authority is not a construct designed through collective engagement with media professionals, but rather another extension of government control.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the formation of the proposed authority's interim committee, which is suggested to be appointed directly by the Minister and the Secretary to the Ministry. The organization highlights that such politically motivated appointments would severely compromise the ethical standards, discipline, and policymaking for journalists.

According to the draft, decisions within the board would be made with a quorum of just five members, raising alarm over a situation where only three individuals could dictate critical decisions affecting all media personnel and institutions in the country.

While recognizing the need for a professional body to support the growth of media, the independent media sector insists that this should not occur under the singular authority of the government but should stem from a comprehensive dialogue involving civil society and the media community, ultimately grounded in a national media policy. Thus, they are calling for an urgent withdrawal of the bill, advocating for a transparent approach that includes participation from all stakeholders.
