Intense rainfall sweeping across Bangladesh has resulted in devastating floods, confirming the loss of 51 lives, according to local authorities. The disaster has affected over ten million people, plunging them into distress.
The capital city, Dhaka, along with several other regions, has been severely impacted by this sudden flooding, leaving thousands homeless. A significant portion of the reported fatalities, 28 individuals, occurred in the Cox's Bazar district, a region heavily populated by Rohingya refugees.
Bangladesh, typically prone to flooding during its annual monsoon season, is experiencing heightened rainfall intensity and frequency, attributed to climate change, according to environmental experts.
Authorities are taking measures to evacuate residents from high-risk areas threatened by both flooding and landslides. Additionally, school examinations have been postponed indefinitely as thousands remain sheltering in government relief camps.
Many streets in Dhaka are submerged, with water levels reaching head height, causing significant disruptions to transportation. The government has faced criticism from local media over inadequate maintenance of the city’s drainage systems.
The Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has indicated that conditions may improve in the coming days, particularly in the hilly regions of the country.
However, the meteorological department has warned that continued rainfall is likely in northern and northeastern areas, raising the risk of further flooding in those regions.
