 තරු පන්තියේ සංචාරක හෝටලයක් ඉදිකරන බව පවසමින් කටුනායක ප්‍රදේශයේ පවත්වාගෙන යාමට සැරසෙන සිමෙන්ති නිෂ්පාදන සහ ඇසුරුම් කර්මාන්ත ශාලාවකට එරෙහිව ප්‍රදේශවාසීන් අද (19) විරෝධතාවක නිරත වූහ.

කටුනායක 18 කණුව මංසන්ධිය අසල පිහිටි මෙම භූමියේ සංචාරක හෝටලයක් ඉදිකිරීම සඳහා මධ්‍යම පරිසර අධිකාරිය විසින් 2020 වසරේදී අනුමැතිය ලබා දී තිබුණි.

පසුව 2025 වසරේදී නාගරික සංවර්ධන අධිකාරිය විසින් ද ඒ සඳහා සංවර්ධන බලපත්‍රයක් නිකුත් කර ඇත. කෙසේ වෙතත්, මුලින් වර්ග මීටර් 3,857ක තනි මහල් ගොඩනැගිල්ලක් සඳහා ලබාගෙන තිබූ අනුමැතිය, පසුව වර්ග මීටර් 12,925ක වපසරියකින් යුතු පස් මහල් සිමෙන්ති කර්මාන්ත ශාලාවක් දක්වා වෙනස් කර ඇති බව විරෝධතාකරුවෝ පෙන්වා දෙති.

අක්කර 6කට අධික මෙම භූමිය කොළඹ - කටුනායක ප්‍රධාන මාර්ගයේ සිට මීගමුව කළපුව දක්වා විහිදේ.

 මෙම කර්මාන්ත ශාලාව ඉදිකිරීම හේතුවෙන් කටුනායක ගුවන් තොටුපොළ, අධිවේගී මාර්ගය, ප්‍රසිද්ධ ජාත්‍යන්තර පාසල් තුනක් සහ ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටි සංචාරක හෝටල් රැසකට සෘජු බලපෑම් එල්ල වන බව ප්‍රදේශවාසීහු පවසති.

එමෙන්ම, අතිවිශේෂ ගැසට් පත්‍රයකින් ආරක්ෂිත වනාන්තරයක් ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කර ඇති ලියනගෙමුල්ල කඩොලාන පද්ධතියට සහ මීගමුව කළපුවේ රැකියාවල නිරත ධීවර ජනතාවට ද මෙයින් දැඩි හානි සිදුවන බව ඔවුහු අවධාරණය කරති.

අතිශය සංවේදී ජනාවාස සහ සංචාරක කලාපයක් මැද සිමෙන්ති දූවිලි ව්‍යාප්ත වීමෙන් සමස්ත පරිසර පද්ධතියම විනාශ වීමේ අවදානමක් පවතින බව පෙන්වා දෙන විරෝධතාකරුවන් රජයෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතිය වහාම නතර කරන ලෙසයි.

කටුනායක නිදහස් වෙළෙඳ කලාපයේ සේවිකාවන්ගේ නේවාසිකාගාර සහ මුතුරාජවෙල සංචාරක බෝට්ටු ව්‍යාපාර ද මෙමගින් දැඩි තර්ජනයකට ලක්ව ඇති බව විරෝධතාවයට එක්වූ පිරිස් වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කර සිටියහ.

Local Protests Erupt Against Proposed Hotel and Factory Project in Katunayake

Residents in Katunayake took to the streets today to voice their opposition against a planned construction project that involves a tourist hotel and a cement manufacturing facility. The demonstration, held near the 18th kilometer post on the Colombo-Katunayake road, highlighted community concerns regarding the impact of such developments on the area.

The Central Environment Authority had initially granted approval in 2020 for the construction of a tourist hotel on the site, which covers over 6 acres. Subsequently, the Urban Development Authority issued a development permit in 2025. Protesters revealed that the scope of the project had significantly changed, evolving from a single-story building of 3,857 square meters to a five-story cement manufacturing plant occupying 12,925 square meters.

This expansive site stretches along the main Colombo-Katunayake highway to Minuwangoda, raising alarms among locals who believe the factory's construction will adversely affect Katunayake Airport, nearby expressways, and several prominent international schools in the vicinity.

Additionally, residents pointed out that the proposed factory threatens declared conservation areas, such as the Liyangemulla-Kadolana system, and poses risks to local fishermen's livelihoods in Minuwangoda Kalapura. The potential for cement dust pollution in a highly sensitive residential and tourism zone has sparked fears about broader environmental degradation.

Protesters emphatically demanded that the government halt the project immediately, emphasizing the urgent need to protect the community's health and environmental integrity. They also noted that the housing facilities for workers in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone and businesses dependent on the tourism sector could face serious threats as a result of the proposed developments.
