Sri Lanka Faces Severe Dollar Crisis, Ex-Minister Accuses Government of Cover-Up

Former Minister Bandula Gunawardena has accused the current administration of downplaying the severe dollar crisis that Sri Lanka is facing, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He highlighted that the country’s net foreign assets had plummeted to a concerning $3 billion amid the economic turmoil.

According to Gunawardena, during Ranil Wickremesinghe's tenure, agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the restructuring of loans were projected to raise foreign reserves to $6.1 billion by the end of 2024. However, he revealed that since the current government came to power, the growth in foreign reserves has been minimal, at just $0.4 billion, leading to a current reserve level of approximately $6.4 billion.

Moreover, Gunawardena pointed out that despite expectations from the IMF that foreign reserves should reach $9.27 billion by the end of this year, the country faces a significant shortfall of about $3 billion.

Alarmingly, he warned of the rising trade deficit, with import costs escalating faster than export income, posing a serious risk of the dollar appreciating to around 350 Sri Lankan rupees in the future.

The former minister further accused officials from the Ministry of Finance of not adequately informing the President about the financial crisis, suggesting that they were deliberately obscuring the truth.
