Legal Action Against Tax Evasion to Be Pursued by Local Revenue Department

The Local Revenue Department has decided to initiate legal proceedings against individuals and organizations that evade local income tax payments. This decisive move comes in accordance with the powers conferred by the Local Revenue (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2026.

The department's actions will target offenses such as failing to register for taxation, not submitting tax returns as required, diverting tax payments, and withholding necessary information or documentation from the department.

Before proceeding with legal action, the Local Revenue Department will inform the relevant parties and provide a 30-day grace period for compliance. This initiative aims to give those who may have made errors the opportunity to rectify their deficiencies.

If parties fail to address their shortcomings within this period, they will face charges in Magistrate's Court. The department emphasizes that penalties may include fines of up to Rs. 400,000 or a six-month prison term, or both, for those found guilty.

The primary objective of this initiative is not to penalize compliant taxpayers but rather to identify and recover revenues from those who are evading payment. The Local Revenue Department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring fairness in the tax system while holding accountable those who violate tax regulations.
