Shooting Incident Linked to Rival Gang Conflict in Dewinuwara

A recent shooting targeting the residence of a close relative of organized crime figure Shanta Unakuruwa has been identified by police as potentially stemming from an ongoing feud between two powerful underworld factions. The incident unfolded late last night in the Galagedanda area of Dewinuwara.

According to reports, an individual arrived at the scene in a vehicle and discharged multiple rounds from a 9mm firearm before fleeing the area. Fortunately, there was no one at home during the attack, although the gunfire resulted in significant damage to the walls of the house and surrounding fence.

Police investigations revealed that the targeted premises belong to a female relative associated with Unakuruwa. Sources indicate that the motive for the shooting is linked to an existing conflict between two dance troupes participating in an upcoming procession at the Dewinuwara temple.

Accompanying this unsettling situation are several threatening audio recordings circulating on social media, purportedly exchanged between notorious gang members Kanjipani Imran, currently abroad, and fellow underworld figure 'Dehiwala Mally.' These recordings reportedly contain threats against the Dewinuwara Basnayake Nilame, heightening concerns over the longstanding animosity between Unakuruwa and Dehiwala Mally.

In light of the death threats received and broader security concerns surrounding the procession, Basnayake Nilame Thilina Madhusankha has lodged a formal complaint with the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Matara District.

In response to the escalating threat levels, police headquarters has announced that over 500 officers will be deployed to ensure security in the area during the event. The Gandara police are continuing their investigations into the shooting incident and the circumstances surrounding it.
