 දෙවිනුවර ඓතිහාසික උත්පලවණ්ණ ශ්‍රී විෂ්ණු මහා දේවාලයේ 769 වන වාර්ෂික ඇසළ මහා පෙරහර මංගල්‍යයේ කාවඩි නර්තන අංගය සම්බන්ධයෙන් මතභේදාත්මක තත්ත්වයක් හටගෙන තිබේ.

ආරක්ෂක හේතූන් මත මෙම අංගය ඉවත් කරන ලෙස පොලිස්පතිවරයා සහ දිස්ත්‍රික් ලේකම්වරයා නිර්දේශ කර තිබියදී, එම නර්තන අංගය සඳහා අවසර ලබා දෙමින් බස්නායක නිලමේවරයා විසින් ලිපියක් නිකුත් කිරීම මෙයට හේතුවී ඇත.

දෙවිනුවර බස්නායක නිලමේ ආරච්චිගේ තිළිණ මධුශංක මහතා විසින් කාවඩි නර්තන ශිල්පීන්ගේ සංසදය වෙත 2026.07.26 දිනැතිව යොමු කරන ලද ලිපිය මඟින් පෙන්වා දෙන්නේ, 06 වන පේළි පෙරහර සඳහා කාවඩි නර්තන කණ්ඩායම් සම්බන්ධ කර ගැනීමට තමන්ගේ කිසිදු විරුද්ධත්වයක් නොමැති බවයි. ඒ අනුව ලියාපදිංචි කණ්ඩායම් 25 කට පමණක් නර්තනයේ යෙදීමට අවසර ලබා දෙන බවද එම ලිපියේ සඳහන් වේ.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, මෙම තීරණය පොලිස්පති විසින් මීට පෙර නිකුත් කරන ලද ආරක්ෂක උපදෙස්වලට  පටහැනි වේ. පාතාල කල්ලි දෙකක් අතර පවතින ගැටුමක් සහ විදේශගතව සිටින 'කංජිපානි ඉම්රාන්' නමැති අපරාධකරු විසින් බස්නායක නිලමේවරයාට එල්ල කර ඇති මරණ තර්ජන සැලකිල්ලට ගනිමින්, මෙවර කාවඩි අංගය පෙරහරෙන් ඉවත් කරන ලෙස පොලිස්පතිවරයා මාතර දිස්ත්‍රික් ලේකම්වරයා වෙත ලිඛිතව දැනුම් දී තිබිණි.

රාජ්‍ය බුද්ධි සේවාව ඇතුළු බුද්ධි අංශ වාර්තා මඟින් අනතුරු අඟවා තිබුණේ, 40,000 කට අධික ජනතාවක් රැස්වන මෙම අවස්ථාවේදී ඩ්‍රෝන තාක්ෂණය භාවිත කරමින් ප්‍රහාරයක් එල්ල වීමේ හෝ මහජන කලබලයක් ඇති වීමේ දැඩි අවදානමක් පවතින බවයි.

Controversy Surrounds Kavadi Dance at Dewinuwara Annual Festival

A heated controversy has emerged regarding the Kavadi dance component of the 769th annual Esala Maha Perahera at the historic Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in Dewinuwara. This follows security recommendations from local authorities to remove the dance from the festivities.

Police Chief and District Secretary have urged the removal of the Kavadi dances, citing safety concerns. However, this was contradicted by a letter issued by the Basnayake Nilame, which granted permission for the dance to proceed, leading to the current discord.

In a letter addressed to the Kavadi dance performers' association dated July 26, 2026, T. Madhushanka, the Basnayake Nilame of Dewinuwara, indicated that he holds no objections to involving Kavadi dance groups in the parade. The letter further clarified that permits would be granted to approximately 25 registered groups to participate in the dance.

This decision appears to conflict with prior security advisories issued by the Police Chief, particularly in light of ongoing gang rivalries and death threats directed at the Basnayake Nilame from a criminal known as 'Kanjipani Imran,' currently abroad. The Police Chief had explicitly advised the District Secretary of Matara to remove the Kavadi element from this year’s procession.

Reports from intelligence agencies, including the State Intelligence Service, have warned of a serious risk posed by drone technology during an event expected to draw over 40,000 attendees, raising fears of a potential attack or public disorder.

Given these threats, District Secretary Chandana Thilakarathna has instructed the Basnayake Nilame to take immediate steps to eliminate the Kavadi dance from the festivities, underscoring the authorities' commitment to public safety.
