Trump Administration Considers Military Action Against JNIM in Mali
Reports indicate that the Trump administration is seriously contemplating military intervention against the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group operating in the West African nation of Mali.
If approved, Mali would become the eighth country where Trump has ordered military strikes since the beginning of his second term in office.
While Trump previously declared a commitment to redirecting U.S. resources back home, this potential new military strategy signals a significant shift in his foreign policy approach.
However, there are deep divisions among U.S. officials regarding the proposed airstrike. Sebastian Gorka, a senior director at the National Security Council's counterterrorism division, is an ardent advocate for military action.
JNIM has already solidified its power within Mali, evolving into the most organized and formidable terrorist group in the region, thereby attracting considerable attention from U.S. intelligence.
The current military governance in Mali has steered away from collaborations with Western nations, choosing instead to seek security support from Russia.
Mercenary groups such as Russia's Wagner and African Corps are reportedly active in the area, with U.S. officials accusing Russia of failing to effectively combat terrorism.
The prospect of direct U.S. military involvement in Mali raises concerns about potential clashes with Russian forces stationed in the region, according to foreign policy analysts.
Additionally, the U.S. is reportedly strategizing to facilitate the release of Kevin Rydwout, an American missionary believed to be held captive in Mali.
Intelligence agencies warn that while a U.S. strike could weaken JNIM, the benefits could inadvertently bolster their rivals, the ISIS group. Experts advise reassessing the regional stability before embarking on military action.
