As trade conflicts intensify between U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian leaders, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has issued a stark warning that Canada may suspend electricity and essential mineral supplies to the United States.
This escalation follows President Trump's decision to impose a staggering 50% tariff on Canadian imports of cars, trucks, and steel, set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The move is seen as a catalyst for the ongoing trade dispute.
In addition, a 50% tariff on Canadian goods valued at $20 billion went into effect last Saturday, further straining relations between the two nations.
Ford expressed strong opposition to Trump's actions, indicating that if the U.S. seeks to undermine Canadian manufacturing, Ontario would not hesitate to cut off electricity supplied to 1.5 million American homes and businesses or raise its prices. "If Trump is trying to destroy Canadian production, he better have a battery parcel nearby," Ford quipped sarcastically.
Responding to Ford's remarks, Trump labeled Canadian leaders as "clowns" via his 'Truth Social' account, warning them of dire consequences should they choose to escalate the situation. He asserted that Canada's fate could take a turn for the worse if negotiations fail.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the U.S. for its "take more, give less" approach in negotiations.
In retaliation, Canada is preparing to implement counter-tariffs on American goods starting September 8.
Canada serves as a primary foreign supplier of electricity to the United States, particularly vital for regions like New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, where Canadian energy supply is a crucial factor in meeting electrical demands.
