 මහවැලි ගග පිටාර ගැලීමෙන් පීඩාවට පත් නාවලපිටිය සේලම්බ්‍රිජ්, කිතුල්කොටේ, ලබුවැල්කොටුව, මඤ්ඤොක්කාවත්ත සහ ඉඹුල්පිටිය යන ප්‍රදේශවල පදිංචිකරුවන් තම ගැටළුව සම්බන්ධයෙන් සාකච්ඡා කිරිමට නාවලපිටිය පස්භාගේ කෝරලයේ ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාලයට පැමිණියත්, එම ජනතාව සමග සාකච්ඡා කිරිම ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම්වරිය ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කිරිම හමුවේ පීඩාවට පත් එම ජනතාව ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාලය ඉදිරිපිට උද්ගෝෂණයක නිරත විය.

පීඩාවට පත් එම ජනතාව (23) දිනයේදි ඉඩම් ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ කොමිශන් සභාවට අයත් නාවලපිටිය හයින්ෆෝඩ් වතුයායේ ඉඩම් බලෙන් අත්පත් කර ගැනිමට උත්සහ කිරිමේදි නාවලපිටිය පොලිසියේ නිළධාරින් විසින් ඔවුන්ගේ ගැටළුව විසදීමට ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම්වරිය සමග සාකච්ඡා කිරිමට අවස්ථාව ලබා දෙන බවට පොරොන්දු විමෙන් අනතුරුව එම ජනතාව (23) දින එම විරෝධතාවය තාවකාලිකව නතර කරනු ලැබීය.

විරෝධතාකරුවන් පස්භාගේ කෝරලයේ ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කාර්යාලය ඉදිරිපිට විරෝධතා පුවරු සහිතව විරෝධතාවයක නියැලුණු අතර, නාවලපිටිය පොලිස් ස්ථානාධිපති කේ.එම්. කුලතුංග මහතා විසින් උද්ඝෝෂකයන් තිදෙනෙකුට පසුව ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම්වරයා සමග සාකච්ඡා කිරිමට අවස්ථාව ලබා දෙන ලදී.

සාකච්ඡාවෙන් අනතුරුව මාධ්‍යයට අදහස් දැක්වූ පීඩාවට පත් ජනතාව කියා සිටියේ, ජාතික ජන බලවේග මහනුවර දිස්ත්‍රික් පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී තුෂාරි ජයසිංහ මහත්මියව මේ පිළිබඳව දැනුවත් කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව අවශ්‍ය පියවර ලබා ගැනීමට ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම්වරිය කටයුතු කරන බවට පොරොන්දු වූ බවයි.

Protests Erupt in Nawagampura Over Land Acquisition Issues

Residents of Nawagampura, including areas such as Selambagoda, Kithulkote, Labugalkotuwa, Mahanokkawatta, and Imbulpitiya, expressed their frustrations through protests this week, drawing attention to their ongoing struggles regarding land acquisition. The discontent among the local population centers around the activities of the Land Reform Commission, particularly in relation to estates in the region.

As community members gathered outside the local Divisional Secretary’s office in Nawagampura South Korale, they sought to engage in discussions to address their grievances. Tensions escalated when their requests for dialogue with officials were declined, leading to a demonstration in front of the Divisional Secretary’s office.

The protests were sparked by recent attempts to forcibly acquire land from the Hainford estate, a move that prompted local residents to demand immediate intervention from governmental authorities. On the evening of the 23rd, police officials were deployed to the site in response to the escalating situation. The authorities ultimately agreed to facilitate discussions between protestors and the Divisional Secretary, which momentarily quelled the demonstrations.

The local residents remained adamant about their need to resolve pressing issues pertaining to land rights. Following the discussions, representatives from the demonstrators voiced their gratitude for the engagement, expressing optimism for needed action from the Divisional Secretary in collaboration with the National People’s Power MP, Tushari Jayasinghe. They were relieved to receive assurances of further support to address their situation.

Demonstrators also highlighted the unauthorized construction of structures within the vicinity of the Hainford estate, emphasizing the urgency of their demands for recognition of their property rights. As the local community continues to press for resolutions, authorities are urged to take timely action to address the ongoing unrest.
