 මන්නාරම් ද්‍රෝණියේ සිට පානදුර දක්වා වූ මුහුදු තීරයේ විශාල තෙල් සහ ගෑස් නිධි පවතින බවත්, ඉන් ඉතා උසස් තත්ත්වයේ ගෑස් නිධි දෙකක් දැනටමත් හඳුනාගෙන ඇති බවත් පේරාදෙණිය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ භූගර්භ හා භූ විද්‍යා අධ්‍යයන අංශයේ හිටපු ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ මහාචාර්ය අතුල සේනාරත්න මහතා පවසයි.

මහාචාර්යවරයා සඳහන් කළේ, මන්නාරම් ද්‍රෝණියේ කැණීම් කරන ලද ගවේෂණ ළිං හතරෙන් දෙකකම සාර්ථක ලෙස ගෑස් නිධි හමුවී ඇති බවයි.

ලෝක මට්ටමින් ගවේෂණ ළිං 20-25ක් කැණීමේදී සාර්ථක වන්නේ ළිං 2ක් හෝ 3ක් පමණක් වුවද, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මෙම සාර්ථකත්වය සියයට 50ක ඉහළ මට්ටමක පවතින බව ඔහු පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

මෙම ගෑස් නිධි මුහුදු පතුලේ සිට මීටර් 3000ක් පමණ ගැඹුරින් පිහිටා ඇති බවත්, ඒවා වසර මිලියන ගණනක් පැරණි ලාවා තට්ටුවලට යටවී ආරක්ෂිතව පවතින බවත් මහාචාර්යවරයා අනාවරණය කළේය. මන්නාරමේ සිට දකුණු දෙසට පානදුර දක්වා වූ ගැඹුරු මුහුදේ පෙට්‍රොලියම් නිධි පවතින බවට දත්ත මගින් තහවුරු වී ඇති බැවින්, ඉදිරියේදී එම ප්‍රදේශවල ද ගවේෂණ කටයුතු සිදු කිරීමේ වැදගත්කම ඔහු අවධාරණය කළේය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට අවශ්‍ය පෙට්‍රොලියම් තාක්ෂණික දැනුම සහිත විද්‍යාඥයන් මෙරට තුළම සිටින බව පැවසූ මහාචාර්ය සේනාරත්න මහතා, පේරාදෙණිය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය විසින් 2001 වසරේ සිට 'පෙට්‍රොලියම් ජියෝලොජි' (Petroleum Geology) විෂයය උගන්වමින් දක්ෂ භූ විද්‍යාඥයන් පිරිසක් බිහි කර ඇති බව ද සඳහන් කළේය.

මෙම ස්වභාවික සම්පත් නිසි ලෙස ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගැනීම හරහා මෙරට බලශක්ති අර්බුදයට ස්ථිර විසඳුමක් ලබාගත හැකි බවත්, පිටරටින් ගෑස් ගෙන්වීම වෙනුවට දේශීය සම්පත් භාවිතයෙන් රටේ ආර්ථිකය ශක්තිමත් කළ හැකි බවත් මහාචාර්යවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් පවසා සිටියේය.

Significant Oil and Gas Reserves Discovered Off the Coast of Mannar

The Mannar Basin off the Sri Lankan coast is believed to hold vast reserves of oil and gas, with two extremely high-quality gas deposits already identified. This revelation comes from Professor Athula Senaratne, a former senior academic in the Department of Geology and Geography at the University of Peradeniya.

Professor Senaratne disclosed that among four exploratory wells drilled in the Mannar Basin, two have successfully encountered gas deposits. He emphasized that while global success rates for exploratory drilling typically hover around 10-15%—with only two or three successful wells out of 20-25—the success rate in Sri Lanka exceeds 50%.

Located approximately 3,000 meters below the seabed, these gas reserves are securely encased beneath ancient lava formations. Data has confirmed the presence of petroleum deposits in the deep waters stretching from Mannar to Panadura, highlighting the critical need for further exploration in these areas.

Stressing the importance of developing local expertise, Professor Senaratne noted that Sri Lanka possesses skilled scientists with extensive knowledge of petroleum technology. Since 2001, the University of Peradeniya has been nurturing a talented pool of geologists through its Petroleum Geology course.

He further asserted that effective utilization of these natural resources could provide a sustainable solution to Sri Lanka's energy crisis, potentially strengthening the economy by relying on domestic resources rather than importing gas.
