නාවලපිටිය ප්රදේශයට පසුගියදා බලපෑ අයහපත් කාලගුණයත් සමග මහවැලි ගඟ උතුරා යෑම නිසා ඇතිවූ ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයක් අවතැන් තමන්ට එම ස්ථානවල ජීවත්වීමට නොහැකි බවත්, ඒ සඳහා සුදුසු ඉඩම් කට්ටි ලබා දෙන ලෙස බලකරමින් නාවලපිටිය හයින්ෆෝඩ් වතුයායේ වතුකම්කරුවන් (23) දින නාවලපිටිය මාපකන්ද මාර්ගයේ උසස් තාක්ෂණය ආයතනය අසළදී විරෝධතාවයක නියැලින.
සෑම වසරකම මහවැලි ගඟේ උතුරා යෑම නිසා තම නිවාස ජලයෙන් යටවන බවත්, යලිත් (03) දින ඇති වූ ගංවතුරෙන් තම නිවාස යටවී හානියට පත් වූ ඇති බවත්, එහෙත් මෙතෙක් කිසිදු බලධාරියෙක් තමන් පිළිබඳ සොයා නොබැලූ බවයි විරෝධතායේ නියැලී සිටි පීඩාවට පත් ජනතාව කියා සිටියේ.
2024 වර්ෂයේදී හිටපු ක්රීඩා අමාත්ය මහින්දානන්ද අලුත්ගමගේ මහතා මැදිහත්ව මෙසේ ගංවතුරෙන් පීඩාවට පත් වන පවුල් සඳහා නාවලපිටිය මාපකන්ද මාර්ගයේ ඇති ඉඩම් ප්රතිසංස්කරණ කොමිශන් සභාවට අයත් ඉඩම් කොටස් ලබා දෙන බවට පොරොන්දුව රුපියල් දෙදහස් පන්සියයක මුදලක් ලබාගත් බවත්, නමුත් ඉන් වසර දෙකකට පසුවත් එම ඉඩම් තමන්ට හිමිනොවුන බවට ප්රකාශ කරමින් එම ඉඩමේ තාවකාලික කූඩාරමක්ද ඉදි කර ගනිමින් මෙසේ විරෝධාතාවයේ නියැලී සිටියහ.

නාවලපිටිය පොලිසියේ ස්ථානාධිපති ප්රධාන පොලිස් පරික්ෂක කේ.ම්.කුලතුංග මහතාගේ උපදෙස් මත නිලධාරීන් පිරිසක් එම ස්ථානයට පැමිණ 24 දින ප්රාදේශීය ලේකම් සමග සාකච්ඡාවක් ලබදෙනෙන බවට පොරොන්දු වීමෙන් පසු විරෝධතාවයේ නියැලී සිටි පිරිස තාවකාලික ඉදි කල අට්ටාලය එම ස්ථානයේම තබා සාකච්ඡාවෙන් යහපත් ප්රතිඵලයක් නොලදහොත් නැවත පැමිණ එම රජයේ ඉඩම් වෙන් කර ගෙන තමන් එම ඉඩම් කල නිවාස ඉදි කරන බවයි විරෝධතාවයේ නියැලි සිටි පිරිස කියා සිටියේ.

Flood-Affected Farmers Demand Land for Resettlement in Nawalapitiya
Farmers from the Hyndford plantation in Nawalapitiya protested on Thursday, demanding suitable land plots as the recent inclement weather had caused the Mahaweli River to overflow, making their living conditions unbearable.
The annual flooding from the Mahaweli River has consistently submerged their homes, and the latest flood on the 3rd of the month resulted in significant damage. Protesters lamented that despite their struggles, no officials had reached out to assess their needs or provide assistance.
In a previous commitment made by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, assurances were given for the allocation of land from the Nawalapitiya Resettlement Commission for families affected by the floods, with a provision of 25,000 rupees. However, after two years, the promised land remains unattainable for them, leading to the establishment of temporary shelters at the protest site.
The local government agent of Pasbaga Korala had initially declared that boundaries for the land plots would be marked and allocated to them, yet residents expressed their frustration at receiving no relief up to this date.
Approximately 63 families residing in the Selambij, Kitulkote, and Majnokkawatta areas were significantly affected by this year's flooding, with no assistance provided from either the local government office or the state, according to the protesters.
They have received information that lands would be allocated to the residents of areas like Dolosbage and Paragala, who were impacted by the disastrous storm. However, the protesters emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to ensure that land is provided to those who have been living nearby, even if only an acre.
In response to the situation, a group of officials is expected to visit the area on the 24th for discussions with the local government agent, following directives from K.M. Kulathunga, the Officer in Charge at the Nawalapitiya Police Station. The protesters stated that they would maintain their temporary structures at the site, and if satisfactory results are not achieved from the upcoming discussions, they would return to claim the necessary land to construct homes.
