මුං ඇටවලින් රට ස්වංපෝෂිත කලා..

 පවතින 'එල් නිනෝ' දේශගුණික තත්ත්වය හේතුවෙන් ජලාශවල ජල මට්ටම වේගයෙන් පහළ යමින් පවතින බැවින්, ඉදිරි මහ කන්නයේ වගා කටයුතු සැලසුම් කළ කාලයට වඩා සති දෙකක් කලින් ආරම්භ කිරීමට රජය තීරණය කර තිබේ.

සාමාන්‍යයෙන් අගෝස්තු මාසයේදී ජලාශවල ජල මට්ටම අඩුවීම සාමාන්‍ය තත්ත්වයක් වුවද, මෙවර එල් නිනෝ බලපෑම නිසා වාෂ්පීකරණය ඉහළ ගොස් ජලය සිඳී යාම වේගවත් වී ඇති බව අමාත්‍යවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

මෙම තත්ත්වය කළමනාකරණය කර ගැනීම සඳහා මෝසම් වැසි කාලය උපරිමයෙන් ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගනිමින් මහ කන්නය කල්තියා ආරම්භ කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා බව ඔහු සඳහන් කළේය.

එමෙන්ම, ජලය විශාල වශයෙන් අවශ්‍ය වන වී වගාව වෙනුවට අඩු ජල ප්‍රමාණයකින් වගා කළ හැකි මුං ඇට වැනි අතිරේක බෝග සඳහා ගොවීන් උනන්දු කරවීමට ද රජය සැලසුම් කර ඇත. මුං ඇට වගාව මගින් පසට නයිට්‍රජන් එකතු වන අතරම, අතිරේක ආදායමක් ද ලබාගත හැකි බවත්, මේ වන විට මුං ඇට වලින් රට ස්වංපෝෂිත කර ඇති බවත් ආනයනය නතර කර මෙරට වගාව දිරිමත් කර ඇති බවත් අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය.

මෙම අතිරේක බෝග වගා කරන ගොවීන් සඳහා ද පොහොර සහනාධාර ලබා දීමට කටයුතු කරන බවත්, ජනාධිපතිවරයාගේ ද අවධානය යොමු වී ඇති මෙම වැඩපිළිවෙල හරහා පවතින ජල අර්බුදය හමුවේ වුවද සාර්ථක අස්වැන්නක් ලබා ගැනීමට අපේක්ෂා කරන බවත් නාමල් කරුණාරත්න මහතා වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

Sri Lanka Advances Maha Season Agricultural Activities Amidst El Niño Impact

In response to rapidly declining water levels in reservoirs caused by the current El Niño weather pattern, the Sri Lankan government has decided to commence Maha season cultivation activities two weeks earlier than initially planned. This announcement was made by Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne.

Although it is typical for water levels in reservoirs to decrease during August, this year’s El Niño phenomenon has intensified evaporation rates, further exacerbating the situation. The Deputy Minister pointed out that the effects of this climatic event have significantly accelerated water loss.

To effectively manage the prevailing conditions, Karunaratne revealed that the government aims to maximize the use of the monsoon rains and start Maha cultivation promptly.

In addition, the government is encouraging farmers to focus on alternative crops, such as mung beans, which require less water compared to traditional rice cultivation. He emphasized that mung beans not only enrich the soil with nitrogen but also provide an extra source of income, helping to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in this crop and reducing the need for imports.

Efforts are underway to provide fertilizer assistance to farmers growing these alternative crops. The Deputy Minister further stated that with the attention of the President directed towards this initiative, there is an optimistic expectation of achieving a successful harvest despite the ongoing water crisis.
