The Water Resources Department has issued a warning concerning the anticipated risk of minor flooding in certain low-lying areas in the vicinity of the Kelani River, attributed to ongoing heavy rainfall. The alert indicates that this condition may persist over the next few hours.
Analysis conducted by the department's hydrology division suggests that rising water levels in the Kelani River could potentially inundate several rural secretariats in the Ratnapura District.
Specifically identified are low-lying areas within the secretariats of Palmadulla, Nivitigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, and Elapatha. Residents in these locales are urged to remain vigilant in light of rising water levels.
Furthermore, the department emphasizes the importance of caution for drivers and pedestrians navigating these affected areas, encouraging them to remain aware of the situation and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety against potential disaster scenarios.
The Disaster Management Division has also called for necessary action to be taken in response to this developing situation.
