Concerns Raised Over Dengue Vaccine Accessibility for Sri Lankan Children

Medical professionals and civil rights advocates have voiced strong objections to the plan to exclusively distribute the dengue vaccine 'Qdenga (TAK-003)' through private sectors, arguing it creates an unfair disadvantage for children receiving treatment under the public health system.

Dr. Chamath Sanjeewa, the President of the medical association representing these professionals, emphasized that it is troubling to allow the vaccine’s distribution only to private entities while the National Medicines Regulatory Authority has yet to grant full approval for its use in the country.

He pointed out that despite proposals to introduce this vaccine and the Wolbachia bacteria method for several years, authorities have failed to address the issue adequately. He underscored the importance of initiating discussions or taking steps toward its introduction without further delay.

With the cost of the vaccine reaching approximately $80 on the international market, patients would need to expend around LKR 60,000 to obtain both doses within a three-month interval—an amount far beyond the reach of average citizens.

Dr. Sanjeewa stressed that the Health Ministry must ensure the vaccine is made available for free through government hospitals to avoid placing an undue financial burden on the public.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends this vaccine for children aged 6-16 living in regions with a high incidence of dengue fever.

Clinical trials conducted in Sri Lanka and several other countries have confirmed the vaccine's efficacy, with its rapid ability to provide protection in as little as eight days highlighted as a key benefit. Moreover, it acts against four serotypes of the dengue virus, including DENV-2, which is responsible for approximately 80% of current dengue infections in the country.

So far, the vaccine has been approved in 43 countries, including India, Brazil, Argentina, and members of the European Union, where it is provided for free under various national vaccination programs, as noted by Dr. Sanjeewa.

He further urged the government to take immediate action to ensure the vaccine is available for free at leading pediatric hospitals under the supervision of expert medical committees.
