Sri Lanka Eyes $1.5 Billion Sovereign Bond Issue by 2027

Sri Lanka is strategizing to enter the international sovereign bond market by 2027, aiming to secure a substantial $1.5 billion in funding, according to recent data released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IMF's financial assessment has projected the country's total financing requirements to reach approximately $4.469 billion in American dollars by 2027. The planned issuance of sovereign bonds is expected to cover a significant portion of this financial need.

During a recent press briefing, Evgeny Papaioannou, Head of Operations for the IMF in Sri Lanka, highlighted that the current economic stability achieved by the nation lays a promising foundation for re-entering the international bond market in the upcoming years.

Re-engagement with the sovereign bond market is crucial not only for confirming the sustainability of Sri Lanka's debt but also for maintaining a sufficient foreign exchange reserve. Additionally, it would significantly bolster future reserve growth, as emphasized by Papaioannou.

Sri Lanka is making positive strides toward re-entering the international sovereign bond market either next year or in the near future, and the IMF's previous assessments remain relevant, Papaioannou reiterated.
