Tragic Murder in Achchuvelli: Son Kills Mother Over Drug Money

A shocking incident in Achchuvelli, Jaffna, has led to the tragic killing of a 74-year-old woman by her own son, who reportedly wanted money to purchase drugs. The horrific attack has sent waves of disbelief through the local community.

The victim, who resided on Shiva Devalaya Road in Putthur West, succumbed to fatal injuries inflicted by her son, who is a student at a Hindu College in Jaffna. Known for his academic excellence, he had recently achieved outstanding results in his General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level examinations.

Despite his potential, the young man had fallen into a dangerous habit of substance abuse during his school years, prompting the principal to take action and expel him from the institution alongside two other students due to drug-related issues.

Unable to break free from his addiction, the son frequently pressured his mother for money, often intimidating her into compliance. It has been revealed that a considerable amount of funds sent by his siblings working abroad for their mother’s care had been misappropriated by him to finance his drinking and drug habits.

On the 14th of this month, he demanded money from his mother in his usual manner, but she firmly refused, triggering an explosive reaction from him. The son confessed during police investigations that his mother’s rejection led him to attack her with a stick, ultimately resulting in her death.

Following a tip-off, local police conducted a search of the residence and discovered the deceased woman's lifeless body inside the house. Officers have since launched a thorough investigation into the heinous crime.
