Minister Vasantha Samarasinghe Reveals Steps Taken to Address Rice Shortage in Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan government has initiated measures to import rice in response to the severe shortage affecting the country. Minister of Trade Vasantha Samarasinghe disclosed in Parliament that during previous administrations, no individual was granted special permits for rice imports.
Samarasinghe made these remarks while responding to a question posed by opposition MP Hesanth Vithanage. The MP questioned Samarasinghe about his earlier statement that 2024 would be the last year for rice imports, and sought clarification on why 180,000 metric tons of rice were imported in 2025.
While acknowledging the import of 64,000 metric tons instead of the requested Kiri Samba variety, Vithanage raised concerns about whether other rice types being imported might benefit smugglers, as had been seen in the past.
In his response, the minister outlined the significant decrease in local rice production from October to December 2024, extending to March 2025, which necessitated the government's decision to import approximately 114,000 metric tons of rice to mitigate the shortfall.
Emphasizing accountability, Samarasinghe pointed out that his government has not engaged in the practice of distributing permits for rice imports to friends, unlike previous regimes. He noted that import restrictions have been eased, allowing anyone to import rice within a stipulated timeframe, subject to a tax of 65 rupees per kilogram.
Through these steps, the minister highlighted that the government has effectively managed the rice shortage in the country, successfully importing varieties such as Swarna Nadu, Kiri Ponn, and GR 11.
