Risks Rise as Poaching Continues in Yala National Park Despite Wildlife Authority Challenges

A shocking video captured by a tourist guide reveals a poacher with a firearm stalking a wild animal in the Weheragala area of Yala National Park’s Sector Five. The footage has raised serious concerns about wildlife protection in the region.

The guide described how the poacher, armed with a shotgun, was seen following the animal while tourists were present. Upon witnessing the incident, he immediately recorded the activity and shared the video via WhatsApp with the Deputy Director of Wildlife and senior officials at the area office.

However, after receiving no official response from the authorities regarding the situation, the guide felt compelled to bring the information to the media’s attention.

Reportedly, the suspect featured in the footage has a history of being apprehended for poaching with firearms on three prior occasions, leading to court appearances. Recently, he was fined 150,000 rupees and sentenced to five years in prison by the Tissamaharama court, yet he continues to engage in poaching activities.

In an inquiry regarding the situation, a senior wildlife official acknowledged that while the area encompasses approximately 72,000 hectares, there are only two staff members assigned to cover it. This significant shortage of personnel has made it exceedingly difficult to apprehend poachers.

The official also highlighted that due to the high price of a kilogram of game meat, reaching around 3,000 rupees, many poachers are actively participating in this illegal trade. The lack of resources to effectively apprehend them puts numerous animals' lives in grave danger, further exacerbating the wildlife conservation challenges in Yala National Park.
