Minister Refutes Rumors of Sugar Shop Closure, Highlights Strong Financial Performance

Amid circulating rumors on social media regarding the closure of the Lanka Sugar Company's brown sugar retail outlet in Nugegoda, Minister of Industries and Investment Promotion Sunil Handunetti has declared these claims to be false. According to the minister, the establishment is currently enjoying a significant monthly profit.

Handunetti made these remarks while participating in the Derana 360 program, where he addressed recent speculation linked to worker absenteeism and temporary store closures for lunch breaks as the basis for the misinformation.

Presenting financial data, the minister disclosed the profits garnered by the outlet in the initial months of 2026, shedding light on its robust economic standing:

• January: LKR 162,000
• February: LKR 386,000
• March: LKR 750,000
• April: LKR 187,000
• May: LKR 537,000
• June: LKR 354,000
• July: LKR 994,000

Handunetti emphasized that the retail outlet serves not only as a location for sugar sales but also as a promotional center for local brown sugar and related products such as honey and jaggery.

The store pays a monthly rent of LKR 85,000 and employs two permanent staff members, whose salaries are covered by the Lanka Sugar Company.

The minister pointed out that brown sugar is more health-conscious than white sugar and highlighted the government's objective to encourage consumers to shift towards this healthier alternative.

Furthermore, Handunetti indicated future plans for the Lanka Sugar Company, which includes utilizing non-cultivated lands for tourism and producing organic fertilizers through by-products from cane cultivation.
