සමාජ මාධ්ය පරිශීලකයන්ගේ පෞද්ගලික දත්ත රහස්යතාව සහ ප්රතිපත්ති සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඔවුන්ව හිතාමතාම නොමඟ යවා මුළා කර ඇති බවට ‘මෙටා’ සමාගම වරදකරු බව අමෙරිකාවේ නිව් මෙක්සිකෝ ප්රාන්ත ජූරි සභාවක් තීන්දු කළ බව විදෙස් පුවත් සේවා වාර්තා කරයි. මෙය මෙටා සමාගම මේ වසර තුළ ලැබූ තවත් දැවැන්ත නීතිමය පරාජයකි.

Meta Faces Massive Legal Setback in New Mexico Over Data Privacy Violations
A jury in New Mexico has found Meta Platforms Inc. liable for misleading users about the confidentiality of their personal data and related policies, marking another significant legal defeat for the company this year. Reports indicate that this ruling comes after a two-week trial and has substantial repercussions for the lives of over 2 million residents in the state.
The jury determined that Meta committed more than 4.3 billion violations of the law, with implications that could see fines up to $5,000 for each violation. Consequently, the total penalties could potentially soar to a staggering $219 billion, as future rulings by the presiding judge will finalize the exact amount of the sanctions.
This lawsuit stems from the infamous Cambridge Analytica data scandal, which was revealed in 2018. During the incident, personal information from around 87 million Facebook users was obtained without their consent through a third-party application, which was exploited to target voters for Donald Trump's campaign during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. In response to the breach, New Mexico filed suit against Meta in 2021.
Commenting on the verdict, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez emphasized that the jury's decision clearly illustrates Meta’s disregard for legal standards, representing a historic win in the ongoing efforts to hold tech giants accountable. Nevertheless, Meta has rejected the allegations, asserting that it acted transparently in data handling and misinformation control, and plans to contest the ruling in court.
This is not the first time Meta has faced such setbacks in New Mexico; earlier this March, the company was ordered to pay a $375 million fine for violations related to child safety laws, in addition to a $567 million compensation payment. Furthermore, despite agreeing to a $17 billion settlement in a lawsuit related to its platforms' development aimed at potentially endangering children, New Mexico opted out of this agreement and pursued its case in court.
In addition to Meta, numerous other tech giants like TikTok, Google, Apple, and Netflix are reportedly experiencing intense legal scrutiny and lawsuits around the world concerning improper use of user data and privacy issues.
