Former LTTE Member Arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport

A former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who had recently been repatriated to Sri Lanka after serving a ten-year prison sentence in India, was apprehended at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake. The arrest was carried out by the Police Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) as he attempted to re-establish connections with the restructured LTTE organization.

The police media unit reported that the suspect, a 50-year-old resident of Sandilipai Masiyapitti, was detained based on credible information regarding his activities aimed at reviving the LTTE after his return to the country.

This individual had been arrested by Indian security forces in 2015 for allegedly reactivating and reorganizing the LTTE. Following a lengthy trial, he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. After serving his full term, Indian authorities deported him back to Sri Lanka.

Upon his arrival at Katunayake Airport on October 26, he was taken into custody by a team from the TID, who were prepared for his return.

The police have since obtained a 72-hour detention order for further questioning, indicating that they are investigating his potential connections to ongoing LTTE activities, particularly in southern India, where various former members and networks have attempted to revive the organization and engage in drug and arms trafficking.

Given the context of his return, the TID has initiated an extensive investigation into the suspect's involvement and any links to clandestine activities associated with the LTTE.
