Geopolitical Tensions Drive Brent Crude Prices to New Highs, While Physical Oil Market Experiences Decline

Recent geopolitical unrest and fears of conflict in the Middle East have propelled Brent crude oil prices to their highest levels in five months on international markets. However, contrary to this surge, the physical crude oil market is witnessing a sharp decline in prices, as reported by the prominent energy website, OilPrice.com.

International market data indicates that the benchmark Brent crude reached $116.72 per barrel yesterday, marking a 3.14% increase. Similarly, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also saw a rise of 3.82%, climbing to $103.27 per barrel.

Additionally, the price of OPEC crude rose to $115.09, while Murban crude oil hit $118.00, and Indian crude reached $119.99. The price of Russian Urals crude increased to $106.24, although natural gas prices dropped by 5.58%.

This rapid increase in oil prices on the market stems from investor fears that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East may completely disrupt oil supplies. However, traders point to a contrasting situation in the actual physical crude oil market, as highlighted by Bloomberg News.

Certain oil grades sourced from countries like Iraq and Oman are being sold at significant discounts compared to the Dubai benchmark price, which currently stands at $110.50. For instance, Iraq's Basrah Medium crude, which was sold at a rate comparable to the Dubai price a month ago, is now being offered at a staggering $10 discount.

Furthermore, the premiums applied to Omani crude relative to the Dubai price have plummeted to their lowest levels since mid-July, following previous highs.

The primary contributor to this drop in physical oil prices is the continuous and uninterrupted flow of oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf region. Middle Eastern oil producers have expedited short-distance shipping through the Strait, and a system of transferring oil from one vessel to another off the Omani coast has allowed Asian buyers access to competitively lower prices.

Back in March, there were fears that the Strait of Hormuz might close, causing price differentials between Oman and Dubai crude to soar up to $65. However, with supply levels stabilizing, the current situation reflects a surplus in the physical oil supply, leading to a downward trend in prices.
