Sri Lanka Faces Financial Loss of Rs. 15.765 Billion Due to Substandard Coal Imports
In a revelation during today’s parliamentary session, Energy Minister Anura Yapa Karunaratne disclosed that the country has incurred a staggering financial loss of Rs. 15.765 billion due to the recent importation of substandard coal.
Karunaratne highlighted that the use of this inferior coal has necessitated additional expenditure of Rs. 8.571 billion by the National System Operator (NSO) for procuring electricity from alternative sources, compensating for the lost generating capacity.
Furthermore, maintaining extra stockpiles of coal, as well as essential maintenance and operational costs, have resulted in an added burden of Rs. 7.912 billion on the Electricity Distribution Lanka (EDL) company, according to the minister.
He noted that the government has held Rs. 16.989 billion in fines and performance bonds from the relevant suppliers connected to this situation. However, the total financial loss attributed to the use of substandard coal is firmly estimated at Rs. 15.765 billion.
The minister assured the parliament that this financial detriment caused by the subpar coal usage will not ultimately be passed on to the ordinary electricity consumers, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting the public from these unforeseen costs.
