Education and Environmental Stewardship Key to Sri Lanka's Future, Says Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized the importance of investing in the education and character development of children as a cornerstone of the nation’s true progress. Speaking at the 36th anniversary celebration of the largest rosewood forest system in South Asia, the Namal National Park, she articulated the government's commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious future generations.

Highlighting the unique biodiversity, rich history, and significant educational value of the Namal National Park, she expressed deep respect for the dedication of the late Venerable Rahula, the chief monk, who devoted his life to preserving this natural treasure for future generations. She extended the government's gratitude to all who supported his noble vision.

Asserting that genuine investment lies not in concrete structures but in shaping the minds of the youth, she noted, “The real measure of investment in a country is reflected in the education of our children and the development of their character.”

Dr. Amarasuriya elaborated on the government's reforms aimed at nurturing environmentally aware and well-rounded citizens, stating that the new educational policies extend beyond mere exam preparation. “We are striving to raise children who love the environment and embrace complete citizenship,” she added.

Reflecting on the administration's proactive stance, she pointed out that efforts in environmental conservation have surpassed mere rhetoric. Legislative developments such as the National Environmental Protection Act, passed after a 25-year wait, demonstrate a strengthened commitment to assessing environmental impacts in development projects.

Furthermore, new laws imposing fines of up to 20 million rupees on those who pollute and destroy ecosystems have been introduced, alongside penalties ranging from 1 to 10 million rupees for those damaging wetlands. These initiatives underscore a toughening stance against environmental degradation.

Additionally, a specialized program for groundwater conservation has resulted in free access to clean drinking water for communities near the Namal National Park, showcasing a tangible benefit of the government’s environmental policies.

In conclusion, Dr. Amarasuriya urged collective action to secure both the environment and the future education of children, saying, “Let us all unite to safeguard our environment and the education of our youth for generations to come.”
