Former President's Bail Application Denied by Maligakanda Magistrate Court
The Maligakanda Magistrate Court has rejected a bail application presented by former President Shiranthi Rajapaksa today, marking a significant development in an ongoing investigation involving her organization, “Siriliya Saviya.”
The application was filed amid concerns of potential arrest relating to a comprehensive inquiry being conducted by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division regarding transactions linked to the organization’s bank accounts. Rajapaksa is reported to have submitted the application through her legal representatives out of apprehension over possible detention.
Initially, the court summoned her on the sixth of this month to discuss the matter for the first time. In preparation for today’s hearing, the Director of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division was directed to issue notices for the relevant details to be presented in court.
After reviewing the circumstances today, the Magistrate deemed the bail request inappropriate, leading to its dismissal.
Additionally, the Financial Crimes Investigation Division had previously notified Rajapaksa to appear before them on September 24 to provide a statement regarding financial irregularities associated with the “Siriliya Saviya” initiative.
However, she was admitted to a private hospital in Colombo due to a sudden health issue and subsequently traveled to Singapore for further treatment on September 16.
Upon her return to the country for continued medical care, she indicated concerns over the possibility of arrest at the airport, prompting her to apply for bail under any conditions deemed necessary.
Currently, Rajapaksa remains in custody following her arrest by the Bribery Commission and will be held until the 13th of this month.
