Sri Lanka's Youth Unemployment Rate Surges to 17.8% in Second Quarter of 2026
The youth unemployment rate in Sri Lanka has climbed to 17.8% by the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest report released by the Department of Census and Statistics. This alarming statistic underscores the significant challenges faced by the younger population in securing job opportunities.
Particularly concerning is the rate among young women, which currently stands at a staggering 22.4%. This disparity highlights the heavy obstacles that the young demographic encounters in the labor market, as pointed out by the department.
The Labor Force Survey report, covering the period from April to June 2026, reveals that 150,684 individuals aged between 15 and 24 are currently jobless. In this demographic, the overall unemployment rate for youth is 15.5%, while the number for young women sharply increases to 22.4%, reflecting a broader imbalance in job opportunities between genders.
The total unemployment rate for the country during this quarter has been reported at 4%, amounting to 340,240 people across Sri Lanka without jobs. Furthermore, young men aged 25 to 29 have an unemployment rate of 12.1%, with 7.7% for men in this category, contrasting starkly with the 19.7% rate for women.
Interestingly, the report also highlights high unemployment rates among youth with advanced educational qualifications. For those with qualifications at the A-Level or higher, the overall unemployment rate is 6.7%, with men experiencing a rate of 3.9% and women at 9.6%. Although the survey does not specify the exact reasons behind this pressing issue faced by educated job seekers, the statistics clearly emphasize the severity of the problem.
During the second quarter, the total employed population in Sri Lanka was estimated at 8.24 million, with the economically active population hovering around 8.59 million. Although the overall labor force participation rate stands at 50%, it is concerning that male participation is at a high 70.3%, while female participation among women aged 15 and over is significantly lower at just 32.7%.
