කාවන්තිස්සගේ මරණය ගැන අපි රජයම දැඩි කම්පාවෙන් ඉන්නෙ..- අගමැතිනි

වෙඩි ප්‍රහාරයකට ලක්ව ප්‍රතිකාර ලබමින් සිටියදී අවාසනාවන්ත ලෙස මියගිය ‘කාවන්තිස්ස’ හස්තියා මෙරට අමිල ජාතික වස්තුවක් බවත්, එම හස්තියාගේ අහිමිවීම පිළිබඳව රජයක් ලෙස දැඩි සංවේගයට පත්වන බවත් අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය ආචාර්ය හරිනි අමරසූරිය මෙනෙවිය ප්‍රකාශ කළාය. 

මෙවැනි පාරිසරික අපරාධ සිදුකරන පුද්ගලයන්ගේ තරාතිරම, තනතුර හෝ ධනය නොසලකා ඔවුන්ට එරෙහිව පරිසර නීතිය දැඩිව ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන බවද ඇය අවධාරණය කළාය.

කොළඹ බණ්ඩාරනායක අනුස්මරණ ජාත්‍යන්තර සම්මන්ත්‍රණ ශාලාවේදී (BMICH) පසුගිය 19 වැනිදා පැවති 11 වැනි ‘ජනාධිපති පරිසර සම්මාන’ උළෙල ප්‍රධාන ආරාධිතයා ලෙස අමතමින් අග්‍රාමාත්‍යවරිය මේ බව සඳහන් කළාය. 

මධ්‍යම පරිසර අධිකාරිය සහ පරිසර අමාත්‍යාංශය එක්ව මෙම සම්මාන උළෙල සංවිධානය කර තිබිණි.

එහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දැක්වූ අග්‍රාමාත්‍යවරිය මෙසේද පැවසුවාය.

"කාවන්තිස්ස හස්තියා සියැසින් නොදුටු බහුතරයක් ජනතාව පවා ඒ වියෝවෙන් දැඩි කම්පනයකට පත්වුණා. ඒ අපිට ආදරය කළ අපේම ජාතික වස්තුවක් අහිමි වූ බව සියලු දෙනාටම තදින්ම දැනුණු නිසයි. 

වෙඩි වැදීම නිසා හටගත් බරපතළ ආසාදන තත්ත්වයන් හමුවේ වනජීවී පශු වෛද්‍යවරුන් දැඩි පරිශ්‍රමයක් දැරුවත් හස්තියාගේ දිවි බේරාගැනීමට නොහැකි වුණා. අතීතයේ සිටම මෙරට සද්දන්ත අලි ඇතුන් ඝාතනය වුවද ඔවුන් රැකගැනීමට නිසි වැඩපිළිවෙළක් ක්‍රියාත්මක වී තිබුණේ නැහැ. මෙවැනි බරපතළ අපරාධ සිදුකරන පුද්ගලයින්ට එරෙහිව කිසිදු බුරුලක් නොපෙන්වා නීතිය උපරිමයෙන්ම ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමට රජය අධිෂ්ඨානශීලීව කටයුතු කරනවා."

වනසතුන්ගේ සෞඛ්‍යාරක්ෂාව සහ ප්‍රතිකාර සේවා තවදුරටත් ඉහළ නැංවීම සඳහා රජය ගෙන ඇති ඉදිරි පියවර පැහැදිලි කළ අග්‍රාමාත්‍යවරිය, පරිසර අමාත්‍යාංශයේ සැලසුමකට අනුව නවීන පහසුකම් සහිත නව වනජීවී සත්ව රෝහලක් ඉදිකිරීමට නියමිත බවත්, හදිසි අවස්ථාවලදී ක්‍රියාත්මක වන ජංගම සෞඛ්‍ය සේවා ඒකක ස්ථාපිත කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා බවත් පැවසුවාය.

එමෙන්ම වනසතුන්ගේ ප්‍රතිකාර සඳහා අවශ්‍ය විශේෂඥ දැනුම සහිත වෛද්‍යවරුන් බිහිකිරීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය කාරණයක් බව පෙන්වා දුන් ඇය, පශු වෛද්‍ය අධ්‍යාපන ක්ෂේත්‍රය තවදුරටත් පුළුල් කිරීම සඳහා විශ්වවිද්‍යාල ප්‍රතිපාදන කොමිෂන් සභාව සහ කෘෂිකර්ම, පශු සම්පත් අමාත්‍යාංශ සමඟ එක්ව විශේෂ වැඩපිළිවෙළක් ආරම්භ කර ඇති බවද සඳහන් කළාය.

Prime Minister Voices Outrage Over Killing of 'Kavanthissa' Elephant

The tragic death of 'Kavanthissa', an elephant that fell victim to gun violence while receiving treatment, has sparked profound outrage from the government, according to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. She emphasized that the loss of this majestic creature, considered a priceless national asset, would deeply resonate with the public.

During her remarks at the 11th 'Presidential Environment Awards' ceremony held on October 19 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, the Prime Minister asserted that strict enforcement of environmental laws would be directed against individuals committing such heinous ecological crimes, regardless of their status or wealth.

Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted the shock experienced by many who had never seen Kavanthissa, resonating with the collective grief over the loss of a beloved national heritage. “News of this killing reverberated through the hearts of the people; it signifies the loss of an asset we cherished,” she stated.

Despite the dedicated efforts of wildlife veterinarians who struggled to save the elephant from severe injuries inflicted by a gunshot, the beloved animal could not be rescued. The Prime Minister lamented the lack of systematic measures historically in place to protect Sri Lankans' elephants, which have faced violence for far too long. She assured that there would be no leniency towards offenders, as the government is committed to enforcing laws to the fullest extent against such grave crimes.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister outlined future initiatives aimed at enhancing wildlife health and treatment services. Plans are underway for the construction of a new wildlife hospital equipped with modern facilities, along with the establishment of mobile health service units ready to respond in emergencies.

She underscored the necessity of training specialized veterinarians with the expertise required for the treatment of wildlife, revealing that a collaborative effort is being initiated with the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources to further expand veterinary education programs.
