LAUGFS Faces Legal Action for Gas Supply Disruptions Amid Nationwide Shortage

The Consumer Affairs Authority has taken legal action against LAUGFS, a leading private gas company, in the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court over allegations of disrupting the continuous supply of LP Gas to consumers across the country.

This case has been filed based on claims that LAUGFS violated regulation number 86 issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority, which mandates uninterrupted gas supply. The court, after reviewing the details, has summoned LAUGFS, issuing a notice to present themselves before Additional Magistrate Darshimaa Premarathna on November 11.

In recent weeks, there has been a severe shortage of the light yellow LAUGFS gas cylinders in various regions of the island, with the company’s customer service center confirming that not a single gas cylinder is currently available for distribution.

Typically, LAUGFS sells about 450,000 gas cylinders each month in the local market. However, the company is now in a predicament, unable to provide a specific date for the arrival of ordered gas shipments from abroad.

This shortage has resulted in many customers shifting towards Litro gas, a government-owned entity, placing significant pressure on LAUGFS. Channa Gunawardena, the Chairman of Litro Gas Company, revealed that the company has increased its supply from the usual 32,000 metric tons per month to about 40,000 metric tons to meet the growing demand.

Litro controls around 80% of the gas market in the country, with the remaining 20% supplied by LAUGFS. Usually, Litro sells approximately 180,000 gas cylinders each month, and the Chairman indicated that measures are being accelerated to boost production capacity in response to the supply gap created by the private company’s inability to meet demand.
